Prospects for Sustainable Finance in ASEAN

  1. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has experienced tremendous growth in the sustainable finance sphere in recent years. Several important initiatives have been introduced to provide strategic direction to policymakers in scaling sustainable finance in the region, including introduction of the ASEAN Green, Social, and Sustainability Bond Standards, as well as the release of the Roadmap for ASEAN Sustainable Capital Markets and the Report on Promoting Sustainable Finance in ASEAN.
  2. Many innovative financial instruments have been introduced as ASEAN governments and corporates strive to direct private capital to address long-standing environmental and social ills even as the pandemic eases and a new global normal emerges. Amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, several governments have issued thematic bonds to demonstrate their commitment to meeting the nationally determined contributions in the 2015 Paris Agreement.
  3. As Japan is one of Southeast Asia's major trading partners, Japanese investors can certainly play a significant role in supporting sustainable finance in ASEAN. This article provides an overview of the development of sustainable finance, provides examples of innovative financial instruments, and discusses how Japanese investors can contribute to the sustainable finance market's development in the region.
